Prepaid credit cards offer numerous advantages. For example, users retain full cost control. Only charging the credit is considered cumbersome. There are now some quick, easy and safe solutions for this process.
Top up prepaid credit card: The “classic” way
A prepaid credit card combines the functions of a classic credit card with those of an EC card. This means that, like a classic credit card, a special credit account is set up for the card. Instead of receiving a loan, the cardholder must deposit funds. Traditionally, he transfers money from his checking account to the card account. In principle, it is a conventional bank transfer.
The disadvantage of this variant of top up is the time factor. Only in the best case will the credit be issued on the same day. It is more likely that the credit will take two to three days to be credited to the credit card.
Standing order as an alternative: always credit available
Many banks therefore advise setting up a standing order to top up. With this variant, too, it takes some time for the prepaid credit card credit to be credited.
Due to the fact that deposits are made regularly, there is a good chance that there will always be money in the corresponding account. Ideally, the prepaid credit card can be used at any time.
Cash deposits are credited immediately
As an alternative to the transfers, cardholders can also top up with cash deposits. The great advantage of this variant is that the credit is instant. The cardholder receives a deposit receipt and can use the credit just deposited on the spot. If the deposit is made at the bank, there are also no security concerns.
However, many prepaid credit card users find this type of top-up extremely cumbersome. The way to the branch seems too far – or is out of the question for customers of direct banks, because there are simply no branches. The card providers have therefore come up with a new solution.
Cash can be loaded at numerous retailers
Visa and Mastercard are accepted as payment in tens of thousands of places in Germany. The two card issuers have therefore made agreements with many of these acceptance points – they are usually dealers such as supermarkets. From now on, not only payments with the card are possible. Instead, it is also permissible to recharge your own prepaid credit card here.
Visa alone, for example, has reached a corresponding agreement with more than 10,000 dealers in the Federal Republic. Similar to the case of cash deposits, cardholders receive a deposit receipt for their credit. So the whole process is also quick, easy and safe.
The bank from which the respective prepaid credit card originates provides information about which merchants are involved. Some financial institutions even provide apps that can be used to find suitable jobs in your area.
The special case: the virtual prepaid credit card
A virtual prepaid credit card with which you can actually pay with your smartphone is being used more and more. In addition to classic bank transfers, it is also possible in this case to top up the card at participating retailers by making cash deposits.
The whole thing works via the app belonging to the virtual card. In the application, the user enters the amount by which he wants to top up his credit. The app then generates a code and displays it on the smartphone screen, which the retailer’s cash register reader can recognize.
As soon as the scan is successful, the credit is credited – and the merchant receives the cash. Similar to the plastic card, the cardholder receives a payment slip in return, which secures him.
